Grand Blanc per source to join revamped Saginaw Valley League in 2018

Yesterday, ESPN 100.9 FM broke the news that Grand Blanc was accepted into the Saginaw Valley League.  The Grand Blanc Bobcats weren't left with very many choices following their exit of the KLAA.  Grand Blanc was voted out of the KLAA as the conference lost several teams this past year to the Lakes Valley Conference and Grand Blanc's nearest opponent in the KLAA would have been 27 minutes to Hartland. Teams like Hartland already are traveling from their locations to schools all over Wayne County so you can see why teams don't want to travel to Genesee County any longer.

League opponent, Midland Dow's athletic department welcomed Grand Blanc by tweeting, "Welcome to the SVL Grand Blanc!"

It's not clear why Grand Blanc which borders Flint left the area for the KLAA in 2009.  Since 2010 Grand Blanc and Flint Carman-Ainsworth have met in the first game of the regular season.  By keeping that rivalry intact it makes sense for Grand Blanc to be in the SVL and most importantly the transition will be better.  Grand Blanc in recent years has played SVL foes in the playoffs; Midland in 2011, Carman-Ainsworth in 2012, and Davison in 2016.

The Saginaw Valley League is a diverse league that features higher enrolled schools throughout the major cities north of Metro Detroit.  Flint Southwestern and Flint Northwestern will be merging in Flint to form a united Flint high school football team for the 2017 season.  Bay City John Glenn will join the league in 2017.  The SVL has teams located in; Mount Pleasant, Midland, Bay City, Saginaw, Flint, Davison, and Lapeer.

Grand Blanc entering the SVL will be big for the local Flint area schools who will renewal rivalries and provide more competitive balance to the league.  Having one of the highest enrolled schools in Michigan will only improve the quality of the league, as many teams will put more into playing a team like Grand Blanc than say a previous opponent who was marked off as an easy win in the past.

The addition of Lapeer in 2014 significantly increased the profile of the league and Davison's rise as well.

Grand Blanc applied for the 2018 season, so following the 2017 season you'll be seeing a new and improved Saginaw Valley League.
