  • Colleges that you are interested in:

  • Intangibles:
    • My desire to be the best teammate I can be through my dedication to academics, practice, film study,  weightroom, and all the sacrifices necessary to be the best player I can be for my Ike Football. My football IQ is also a difference maker for me as I play this game. Your going to get a QB who understands defenses and his entire offense so that we are able to execute to the fullest.
  • How I play the game:
    • I consider myself to unselfish, intelligent, hard-working, and dedicated to becoming the best quarterback, leader, and teammate I can be. I study film from last year's 12-1 to understand what I am going to face at the next level. I study my offense daily to better master the playbook as I want my coaches to trust me on the field as a leader even though I will only be a freshman.
  • Outlook on High School Football and it's experiences
    • I am excited to be a freshman going straight to JV. My plans are to lead my team to a winning season and take over on Varsity my sophomore year. My goals this year are to establish myself as the leader of my team and help us win games. As a quarterback I want my completion percentage over 60% along with significantly more TDs than Ints. Also our offense will allow me to be effective in the run game as well. I want to use this year to develop as well as get bigger, faster, and stronger. I am working to understand my offense daily so I can come into high school more prepared than ever. I also hope to catch the eye of D1 schools this year with my play and camps I will attend this summer as an incoming freshman. It's going to be a blast and a challenge I look forward to moving from youth to high school sports.
  • Discuss the potential opportunity or the opportunity of playing on the next level
    • The opportunity to play at the next level is something I cherish. I am working hard everyday to have a better chance of playing in college.  My dad played QB in college so I understand the commitment and dedication it takes academically and athletically.  This is not an opportunity afforded to everyone so to be able to continue playing QB at the next level would be a dream come true for me.

Forest Hills Northern alum Mike Sadler, paid tribute to with beer in his honor

A Michigan State legend was lost in July of 2016 when former Forest Hills Northern / Michigan State graduate Mike Sadler passed away in a car accident.  Sadler an All-American punter will provide memories that last a lifetime for Michigan State and college football fans alike.  In September of 2016, Mike Sadler was inducted into Michigan State's Hall of Fame plus is the only Spartan to earn All-Academic Honors all 4 years.

A Denver, Colorado micro-brewery, Jagged Mountain Brewery which is owned by Michigan State alumni, R.J. Barat who is also a Sterling Heights, MI native - will release the limited supplied beer on June 2nd.  Unfortunately for the many Spartans in Michigan and beer enthusiasts in Michigan there is no distribution in Michigan.

The label reads:
“Hey Diddle Diddle commemorates the infamous trick play that punter Mike Sadler ran during Michigan State’s Rose Bowl season.  Mike was a gifted All-American and Academic All-American athlete with charisma, character, and a witty sense of humor.  He also had a passion for craft beer and home brewing.

Inspired by Mike's favorite creations, we brewed this beer with apricots, blood oranges, and finished with a touch of Belgian yeast and roses.  His legacy of excellence continues to inspire young and old folks alike, so raise a glass and lay down your roses in memory of Michael."

- $1 for every pint sold will be donated to the Michael Sadler Foundation.

The beer itself, "Hey Diddle Diddle," is a play (Hey Diddle Diddle, Send Sadler Up the Middle) that occurred in Michigan State's Rose Bowl season in 2013.  Michigan State was leading Iowa 17-14 in the 3rd quarter when Sadler came out to punt.  Instead Sadler caught the snap, delayed, before running straight up field for 26 yards and a first down.  Michigan State later kicked a field goal on the drive and won the game 26-14.

Sadler in 2013 and 2012 had 3 fake punts for a total of 54 yards.  Sadler appeared in 54 games during his 4 year career at Michigan State.  Sadler tallied 268 punts for 11,307 yards.  Coming out of Forest Hills Northern High School, Sadler was ranked as the #3 punter on Scout, #5 kicker on Scout, and #7 kicker on Rivals.

Grand Rapids area OL Jalen Mayfield commits to Michigan

Grand Rapids Catholic Central 2018 OL Jalen Mayfield committed to the University of Michigan on Tuesday night.  One of the state's top offensive lineman and perhaps the best senior tackle selected Michigan over 16 other offers and a top 5 that included; Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska.

Michigan State offered in January and Minnesota offered a week later.  Mayfield would commit on a visit to Minnesota in less than 2 weeks since being offered by Minnesota.  A month later Michigan would enter the picture and extend an offer to the Gophers commit who then decommitted.  Mayfield would visit; Michigan, Michigan State, and Notre Dame before he committed.

Earlier this month on May 3rd, Mayfield announced he would commit today which is his birthday.

Mayfield entered The D Zone eyes in July 2015 after he was brought up as a freshman to play varsity.  Mayfield was first offered by Central Michigan in June of 2016.

Mayfield is ranked as the #86 player on 247Sports
Mayfield is ranked as the #221 player on Scout
Mayfield is not nationally ranked on Rivals and is listed as their #25 prospect in-state

Also 247Sports compiled a National composite ranking of all of the scouting websites that was #310.

Mayfield will figure to contribute very early at Michigan once he adapts to the speed of the college game as he had a lot of tools to build off of.

Walled Lake Western reports over 60 colleges in school Monday

The final full week of evaluation period started off with a big bang for the Walled Lake Western Warriors who were the Division 2 runner-ups in 2016.  Head Coach Mike Zdebski reported that over 60 college coaches were in to evaluate prospects Monday.

The following conferences were represented:  SEC, Big 10, and ACC plus D1-FCS, D2, D3, and NAIA programs.

Walled Lake Western 2019 OT/DE Spencer Brown who is a top 100 national recruit received his 22nd, 21st, and 20th offers today.  It's the 3rd time this year that Brown received 3 offers in a single day. Iowa, Missouri, and Virginia Tech offered.

Walled Lake Western 2018 LB Jonathon Moffett had 115 tackles as a junior and looks every bit a college prospect.  Indiana State became his first offer today.

Other players who weren't offered on Monday, but hold offers:
Walled Lake Western 2019 QB Sam Johnson - 13 offers
Walled Lake Western 2018 WR/S Justin Thomas - 3 offers
Walled Lake Western 2019 ATH Kobe Myers - 3 offers
Walled Lake Western 2019 OT/DT Jake Dean - 3 offers
Walled Lake Western 2020 CB/WR Calvin Brown - 1 offer
Walled Lake Western 2020 WR Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen - 1 offer

The list could go on and on of other standouts who haven't been offered yet, but with the staff Western has all of this should come to no surprise as WLW should be a solid contender again in D2.

Alabama offers ferocious East Kentwood Linemen, Logan Brown and Mazi Smith

This morning Alabama was busy offering two of the county's best lineman in East Kentwood 2019 OT Logan Brown and East Kentwood 2018 DT Mazi Smith.  Kentwood which is a suburb Southeast of Grand Rapids has the 6th highest enrollment among high schools in Michigan with 2,639 students.

East Kentwood hasn't dominated in the win column, but in recent years EK has produced several college football players and in this case has 2 elite sophomores coming up.

Mazi Smith was ranked as the #160 player on 247Sports this off-season, as the defensive tackle is a very powerful and aggressive force who leaves opposing lineman exhausted and beaten.  With Alabama offering in May it's his 5th offer in the month and nearly half of his 11 total.  Michigan State, Kentucky, Louisville, and Minnesota have also offered.

Logan Brown in the same ranking system by 247Sports was selected in the top 100 with the #87 overall spot.  Brown is another aggressive player with the ideal body and frame for an offensive tackle.  Brown at this point last year had no offers and now holds 13 offers including; Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin, etc.

Alabama's only other offer during evaluation period as of this afternoon was to Muskegon 2019 OT Anthony Bradford.  The powerhouse program has only 1 other offer on the table to Belleville 2019 OT Devontae Dobbs.

The Alabama offer is a special one in Michigan as it's the pinnacle offer at this moment.  The Crimson Tide are host to the most recent Heisman Trophy winner out of Michigan in Mark Ingram.  Other recent Alabama offers since 2011 include:  Jaylen Kelly-Powell,  Hunter Rison,  Donovan Peoples-Jones,  Corey Malone-Hatcher,  Donnie Corley,  Khalid Kareem,  Mike Onwenu,  Kyonta Stallworth,  Damon Webb,  Malik McDowell,  Jayru Campbell,  Dave Dawson, Drake Harris, and Royce Jenkins-Stone.   None of the players in this paragraph signed with Alabama.

2nd Annual Macomb County Football Combine Top Performers and Highlights

South Lake / Mount Union graduate, B.J. Mitchell addresses participants

On Tuesday the Macomb Area Conference high school, L'Anse Creuse North hosted the 2nd annual Macomb Conference football combine/showcase.   The event brought in 200 soon to be seniors for a pre-camp season experience.  Overall a dozen colleges were represented with around 40 total coaches including head coaches from; Saginaw Valley State, Siena Heights, and Lawrence Tech.

L'Anse Creuse North 2018 OLB/S Myles McHaney was the biggest name in advance that was participating in the event.  McHaney holds an offer from Central Michigan and would be a next level OLB or Safety depending on his growth as he moves great on his feet and ball skills/coverage to be recruited at either.  Schools who recruit him an Linebacker don't need to look far to see how well he covers as he was a DB in his junior film.

Fitzgerald 2018 DE Giovanni Kizer was the biggest breakout in attendance as the 6'6" 225 pounder stood out from the word, go.  Kizer on 2nd look was a beast for Fitzgerald as a junior with 18 tackles for loss and 3 sacks.  Kizer has a ton intangibles to build around and the frame to add more weight.  Kizer is coached by former Penn State DE, C.J Olaniyan so you know he's learning good.

L'Anse Creuse North 2018 QB Blake Daniels has had a quiet off-season so far, but is still looking for his first offer.  Daniels should have left a lasting impression on each coaching staff there if a Division 1 school doesn't come after him.  Daniels has the size and grew into his body to round out his dual threat abilities.

Fraser 2018 WR Kenneath Redd was one of the more active receivers during the event as he was constantly fighting for reps and was by far the most consistent at the position.  Redd created separation nonstop and caught everything within his reach.

Richmond 2018 DE Colton McKiernan is 6'5" 210 lbs so his size alone creates buzz, but he performed well in everything he did to grab and keep eyes on him.  McKiernan is also a stud wrestler so we fully expect him to get a lot of attention for both sports.

Utica 2018 WR/CB Kavon Higdon could be recruited on both sides of the ball as the shifty and athletic playmaker selected to play offense during the camp.  Higdon displayed his explosive burst as well getting space between defenders and hauled in an impressive leaping catch during 1 on 1's.

Romeo 2018 WR/CB Nate Goralski had a few nice routes and is sure handed.  Goralski had a route at one point during the camp that drew the loudest "ooh and aah" from participants.

De La Salle 2018 SS/OLB Brendan Madigan picked up his first Division 1-FCS equivalent offer from Columbia the week prior and showcased to the local schools his range in coverage and ball skills.

Fraser 2018 RB Chris Brown is a slot / RB combo so during the event he was able to catch the ball out of backfield well and make defenders miss or run past them as they were unbalanced.

Fraser 2018 WR/FS Noah Walker had little problems getting open and creating separation all day.  Lined up as CB in 1 on 1's when really a Safety and utilized length / speed to make up for lack of CB technique.

De La Salle 2018 RB Cordell Tannyhill Jr. is your every down type runningback so an event like this allows for bits and pieces to be shown.  Tannyhill was sharp in drills.

Chippewa Valley 2018 LB Brian Schieweck can also work at Safety, but has grown more into the linebacker role this off-season.  Schieweck performed well on 1 on 1's as opponents can problems with his physical attributes.

Warren Woods Tower 2018 CB/WR Jajuan Lovejoy broke away from the pack of defensive backs as he displayed good physical and cover skills.

De La Salle 2018 DB/LB Jordan Smith was a consistent defensive presence who went between coverage as a DB and LB.  Smith stood out quickly and had a good performance throughout.

L'Anse Creuse North 2018 K Bryan Plegue was bombing field goals from 40-50 yards out around coaches during the middle of the event.  He's one who we definitely figure will get looked at as a recruit.

Dakota 2018 OL Patrick Donovan is a towering lineman who should drawn attention from every school there.  Size and skill wise Donovan is there, so it's surprising things have been quiet for the Cougars lineman.

Utica 2018 OT Colin Motloch and his partner in crime Utica 2018 RT/DT Logan Wessel provide the size and muscle during the fall and both carried it over to the off-season.  Both should be recruited and both have the tools to transition to the interior OL as well.

De La Salle 2018 TE Cameron Crosby has great size for the position and moves good, but has remained under the radar despite being a pretty well known name.  An FCS or D2 school will be getting a very reliable traditional tight end.

Roseville 2018 DB/Slot Christion Calloway drew a lot of praise as well during the event.  One of a few standouts from what's appearing like a rejuvenated Roseville program.

Roseville 2018 DE/TE Mojave LittleJohn tested very well for his size among his position and was a standout in 1 on 1's.

L'Anse Creuse North 2018 LB/RB Jake Tocco was the first participant in registration and displayed good work in the drills and good performance in 1 on 1's.

De La Salle 2018 DE Nick Cominos versatile defensive lineman who could develop into a DT as well.  Had a 4.58 shuttle and received praise from the coaches in drills.

Muskegon QB La'Darius Jefferson on pace to be first Central Florida signee out of Michigan in years

On this Sunday afternoon, Muskegon 2018 QB La'Darius Jefferson verbally committed to play quarterback at the University of Central Florida.  The AAC conference including Central Florida has begun to notice the vast talent in Michigan as offers have been coming in more frequently.  The offer and effort that UCF put in Muskegon, Michigan paid off big-time with Jefferson committing.  According to our data, no player out of Michigan has signed with Central Florida in at least 15 years!

So what makes Jefferson so appealing to UCF?   Well for starters he's a team player, he split reps with Virginia Tech-bound Kalil Pimpleton as a junior so neither had gaudy statistics.   Muskegon were the Division 3 runner-ups in 2016.  He has a cannon arm and great mobility.

Central Florida will definitely be getting one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks around.  As the 6'2" 200 pounder can run and hit like a linebacker which spells d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r for opponents.

Jefferson started out at Muskegon as a Freshman, left to Mississippi as a sophomore, and returned for his junior season. Jefferson will be there as a senior behind two phenomenal offensive tackles.

Jefferson had double-digit offers so it's barely surprising seeing a school like Central Florida who has had good success in recent years, land his commitment.

Central Florida in 2014 produced the #3 overall pick in the NFL draft, Blake Bortles.

Romeo graduate, Joe Bacci signs with the Tennessee Titans

Today the Tennessee Titans announced a roster move, adding Romeo / Central Michigan FB Joe Bacci.  Bacci was an undrafted free agent who had mini-camp workouts at Baltimore and Los Angeles Chargers.

Bacci was a 2012 graduate from Romeo high school who was a star Linebacker for the Bulldogs.  Bacci committed in June of his junior season as the Chippewas were his lone scholarship offer.

Joe Bacci transitioned from Linebacker to Fullback in between his Redshirt Freshman - Redshirt Sophomore off-season for a total of 3 years as a FB.  Bacci had over 250 career receiving yards and 4 touchdowns.

Bacci is listed as 6'1" 245 lbs

Bacci holds a special spot in my memory as he is the reason I am more aware of my surroundings on sidelines while photographing football games.  The following occurred during my first season that I covered games while being on the field.

In the 2011 Romeo inner-squad scrimmage during August, Bacci carried the ball at the left hash near the sideline when the first defender attempted to tackle him.  Bacci in mid-season-like form dragged the defender towards the sideline.  After he dragged another 2-3 more players closer and closer to the sideline, I thought well this is a Division 1 recruit, I'm going to back off a bit.

So I did.

When Bacci was finally tackled he was on the sideline with 7-8 Romeo players scattered around him and I was safely standing.  Thinking to myself at the time I thought, well that's how that scenario will play out in the future.

Fast forward to 2017 and that situation has played out several times, the scenario itself of a player carrying an entire team trying to tackle has not happened though.

Thinking to myself now I know there's a reason why not every single player makes it to the NFL.

Essexville Garber ATH Ben VanSumeren decommits from Western Michigan

It's the Friday morning that Western Michigan coaches would hope to never have as Essexville Garber 2018 ATH Ben VanSumeren ended his 3-month commitment to Western Michigan.  At the time of his commitment to Western Michigan VanSumeren visited WMU, was offered by WMU, and then the next day he committed.  In March Eastern Michigan and Columbia followed with offers and we imagine tons of schools want to evaluate the athletic specimen in-person this summer.

VanSumeren is 6'3" 215 lbs and had the highest Nike Opening score with 127.74 when he participated in Cleveland.  VanSumeren had a 40.3" vertical jump and a 4.03 short shuttle.

In a release, VanSumeren stated the past month has been stressful for him as many schools have begun to show interest.

VanSumeren figures to be utilized out wide or in an H-Back role where his size and athleticism cause mismatches with linebackers.

As for what's next for the Bay City area prospect, camp season will provide us with that answer.
