DETROIT (2/23/17) – The Detroit Sports Commission today announced the matchups for the 2017 Prep Kickoff Classic. The Prep Kickoff Classic is the premier season-opening high school football showcase in Michigan and will celebrate its 13-year anniversary with seven exciting games Aug. 24-26 at Tom Adams Field on the campus of Wayne State University.
“The Detroit Sports Commission is proud to welcome another great line-up of high school football games to Midtown Detroit,” said Kris Smith, DSC director. “We look forward to again providing a fun and community-focused platform for the teams, bands, cheerleaders and fans to showcase themselves on a big stage.”
The 2017 Prep Kickoff Classic will be the first under the direction of Smith who takes over for Dave Beachnau, founder of the event and former Executive Director of the DSC. Beachnau was recently named Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing & Sports for the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The showcase has embraced a team and match-up selection process emphasizing inclusion since its inception in 2005, hosting more than 80 schools from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. In 2017, the Prep Kickoff Classic will welcome six first-time participants in Almont, Davison, Grosse Ile, Lowell, Walled Lake Western and Indianapolis Cathedral.
The event will kick off at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24 when 2016 MHSAA Division 2 finalist Walled Lake Western faces off against West Bloomfield at 4 p.m. The nightcap on Thursday will feature PKC-newcomer Davison from Genesee County taking on Southfield A&T.
On Friday, Aug. 25, Almont from Lapeer County takes the field vs. Grosse Ile from the Downriver area, at 4 p.m., followed by perennial West-Michigan powerhouse Lowell against the Catholic League’s Warren De La Salle at 7 p.m.
The final day of the Prep Kickoff Classic will begin on Saturday, Aug. 26 at noon with a Detroit East English Village Prep Academy-River Rouge matchup followed by Oak Park vs. Eisenhower at 3 p.m. The Prep Kickoff Classic will conclude at 6 p.m. with two-time reigning Division 2 champion Detroit Martin Luther King against cross-state power Indianapolis Cathedral, who’s the winningest football team in the State of Indiana.
