Western Michigan commits react to P.J. Fleck leaving to Minnesota

Derrick Hubbard

After an incredible run at Western Michigan both on the field and recruiting in-state talent.  P.J. Fleck is off to Minnesota to be their head coach.  Fleck did something the previous staff was unable to do and that was keep the in-state talent home.  Western Michigan has a solid recruiting class in the Class of 2017 and it's tough to see the new coaching staff not honor scholarships less than a month away until National Signing Day.

Northville 2017 LB Trenton Guthrie was committed to Western Michigan over 4 other offers and on the night Fleck took over Minnesota, he was offered and committed to Minnesota.

Saint Mary's 2017 Ralph Holley DT/DE - "Well I always expected it to happen it was no surprise to me he is a successful coach. But as far as my recruiting I am opening my recruitment again the coaches were a big part of my recruiting and I grew close to them and I'm open to going to Minnesota with Fleck and other options after dead period is over."

Dakota 2017 RB/SB Kaiser Carleton  - "All I have to say is I wish him the best of luck, tremendous coach and person, he will bring success to Minnesota and I thank him for giving me a prestige opportunity I'm excited to be a Bronco, WMU feels like home.  RTB!"

Ann Arbor Skyline 2017 LB/RB TreShaun Hayward - "Coach Fleck is a great coach but also an amazing man clearly by what he has done and I don't blame him for making his decision.  It's a business and with my commitment to Western I don't know at this time I haven't been contacted about the situation and that says something."   (Decommitted, night Fleck was hired)

Notre Dame Prep 2017 OT/DE Kyle Sassack - "Coach Fleck is a coach that every player wants to play for. His energy and passion for his players is unrivaled. No matter where he goes, he will be able to succeed and do elite things. Coach Fleck is very deserving of the job he has taken and it's very understandable why he did take it.

As of right now I am still committed to WMU. I have not yet had a chance to talk to my parents about this whole situation and have not had enough time to get a full understanding of this situation and where I stand with other schools and the coaching staff still at Western whether or not they stay."
(Received Minnesota offer, night Fleck was hired)

Ann Arbor Pioneer 2017 DE/LB Derrick Hubbard - "He's a great guy and coach and I'm sure we'll be in touch, as of right now I am committed to western Michigan."

Detroit Jesuit 2017 CB/SS AJ Thomas - "He was a very cool, energetic guy. He managed to change the program totally around from when he started to now and I felt as if we could have only gone up from here. However, as we all know college football is a business and things happen and he did what was best for him. As to my commitment to Western,  I have to talk over it with my family and think about if I want to make any changes in the near future. I may take some visits to reassure that Western is the place for me, but that is something me and my family will have to discuss."

Saint Johns 2017 LB Tanner Motz - "I knew he would have opportunities to leave after this years season I was just hoping he would stay so I could play for him. As of now I'm 100% committed."
