Replacing the production of RB Dennis Norfleet ('09-'11), who's now at Michigan, is almost an impossible thing to do, but that is what Detroit King was faced with entering the 2012 season. Athletes like that don't just grow on trees, but King might have found the answer to their dilemma in 2014 two sport athlete Avonte Maddox. Now I'm not saying he's Dennis Norfleet, but with scoring plays of 55, 68 and 84 yards already, he is a big play waiting to happen every time he touches the ball. He ran a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash this past summer at the Ohio State camp, and that speed shows on the field. This is his first year playing varsity football for King, but you couldn't tell, because he plays just about every skill position on the field, and also excels in baseball for the Crusaders. He may be an unknown to most, but when you watch a King game, #16 will definitely have you saying,"who is that?" Maddox talks with The D - Zone about his team's 0-2 start so far this season, the comparisons to Dennis Norfleet and what his future holds.
Height: 5'9" Weight: 153
First Game Started: Against Southfield this year. It was exciting and I was nervous.
Most Memorable Game: This is my first year and I have only played two games.
Pre-game Rituals: I pray, and keep telling myself to play fast.
Post-game Rituals: I rest my body ,and get my mind set and ready for the next game.
Athlete you model your game after: I build my game around Desean Jackson, because he is fast and not that big.
Branden Hunter / The D - Zone - How heartbreaking was that 1-point loss to Southfield at The Prep Kickoff Classic?
Avonte Maddox - "It was very heartbreaking because that was my first high school game, and we were playing hard but not enough to come out with a victory."
Branden Hunter / The D - Zone - You had the task of covering Southfield star WR Brandon Bean, was it difficult trying to check him?
Avonte Maddox - "No, but he's a good WR."
Branden Hunter / The D - Zone - So far your team has started the 2012 season 0-2. What do you think you all need to do to get a win Friday vs. Osborn?
Avonte Maddox - "We all need to go out here playing hard as a team, and everyone needs to do their job on defense and offense."
Branden Hunter / The D - Zone - You have been the offensive spark for King this year with your ability to make big plays, do you think you can be this year's Dennis Norfleet?
Avonte Maddox - "I'm not going to say that, but I'm just playing as hard as I can, and trying to help my team in anyway."
Branden Hunter / The D - Zone - You are also a very good baseball player, do you see yourself playing both sports in college?
Avonte Maddox - "Yes."
Branden Hunter / The D - Zone - Have you been recruited to play either sport yet, and if so what school(s) have shown interest?
Avonte Maddox - "Baseball I know Michigan State has, but football I'm not sure yet."
Branden Hunter / The D - Zone - Do you wear #16 because of Denard Robinson?
Avonte Maddox - "No."
Branden Hunter / The D - Zone - If a coach was to offer you right now, but first wanted to know what would you be bringing to his program, what would you tell him?
Avonte Maddox - "I'd bring intelligence, speed, hard worker and leadership skills."
